David Burchell from London

David Burchell, 2000s LondonI joined St John Ambulance in January 1964. Among the first duties I attended were two performances by The Beatles at the Brighton Hippodrome theatre.

During my years in London I have attended many of the big royal events including Prince Charles and Lady Diana’s wedding. I have also attended all the London marathons that have taken placehaving just been to the 32nd!

During the 7/7 bombings, I was at Hampton Court as one of the duty ambulance crews. The senior volunteers agreed with the organisers for a reduced coverage and volunteers so vehicles were released to go to London.

We left Hampton Court with two ambulances escorting one large mobile unit on full emergency conditions. By the time we arrived at Waterloo, we had gained a second ambulance and minibus as other volunteers also responded to the call-out. We were kept in reserve in case there were further explosions. We were finally stood down at 8.30pm and were back in Hampton Court by 8.00am the following day.’
