Nicholas Evanson from Devon

Nicholas, 2000sSouth West ‘Five St John Ambulance volunteers had the opportunity to support our Australian colleagues, providing first aid for spectators at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. I was lucky enough to be picked.

The first day at the sailing, set the tone for the entire duty, enabling me to learn about the Australian St John Ambulance from their Cadets. I dealt with few incidents, except for a large group of children who had all been bitten by ants.

Wherever I turned, I bumped into athletes from Team GB, including Paula Radcliffe, which was fitting as my final first aid cover was for the marathon. The duty passed without incident but the respect that the public had for all the volunteers was demonstrated by many.

My experience providing first aid at the Sydney Olympics was the duty of a lifetime.’
