1 in 3 people don’t realise choking can be fatal within minutes

This September, save a Life September is back – helping more people gain the confidence and skills to act when every second counts.

One in three people don’t realise that choking can become life threatening within minutes without first aid, while fewer than half know how to help someone who is choking.

Eight-year-old Poppy Smith knew what to do when fellow Badger Effie began choking at school. Remembering the skills she had learned from St John Ambulance, Poppy gave Effie five sharp back blows, dislodging the food and helping her breathe again.

With your support today, more people can learn life-saving skills, gain confidence in a crisis and be ready to step forward when someone's life is on the line.

Help save more lives

Throughout September, St John volunteers will deliver free demonstrations in communities across the country, teaching people how to respond to choking, cardiac arrest and severe bleeding.

Whether you attend a demonstration, encourage someone else to take part or help spread the word, you can play a part in helping more people become lifesavers.
