For Sarah, a St John Ambulance first aider, that power meant she could step forward and help when someone needed her most.
She was on her way to meet friends for her birthday when she walked through a busy train station after a football match. As she crossed the bridge, she spotted a man who had collapsed on the floor.
His name was Bob. He had stopped breathing.
Without hesitation, Sarah rushed to his side and started CPR. An ambulance was on the way, but in that moment, Sarah knew she was Bob’s only chance of survival.
Thanks to her first aid training, she knew exactly what to do. With the help of an AED, she was able to restart Bob’s heart and keep him alive until paramedics arrived.
Today, Bob is still here with his family.
Sarah was able to step forward that day because she had the confidence and skills that first aid training provides.
But there still aren’t enough people who know what to do when someone collapses or stops breathing.
With the support of people like you, St John Ambulance is working to change that. By 2028, we aim to train 800,000 people every year in lifesaving first aid, helping ensure that more communities have someone ready to act in an emergency.
Together, we can help put the life-saving power of first aid into more hands.
