At St John Ambulance, we're always looking for caring, dedicated people to join our life-saving team. Whether you’re passionate about helping your community, want to learn new skills, or gain experience as a healthcare volunteer - we have an opportunity for you.

Volunteering with us looks different for everyone. You could be delivering first aid, running a local Cadet group, or providing essential support behind the scenes. Or if you’re wanting to step up, then take a look at our leadership roles. Still at university? Why not volunteer with your First Aid Society. There are lots of ways you can get involved.

Our Community Networks are split into region, county, and network, covering the whole of the UK including Hull, Liverpool, and London.

We'll provide you with all the training and guidance you need to get started as a St John Ambulance volunteer. From basic first aid to leading your own Cadet group, our courses are designed for all skill levels so that every volunteer is ready to do their role with confidence.

The type of training you’ll do will depend on your role. Most of our training includes online learning as well as in-person courses.

We’ll be there every step of the way

We understand that starting something new can be daunting. That’s why we’re committed to supporting you while you get familiar with your new role. From your first day, you’ll have your own dedicated induction buddy as well as ongoing support from fellow volunteers. You’ll have the opportunity to connect with your peers, share experiences, and build friendships.

Whether you’re attending your first event or delivering your first youth session, you’ll never be alone. We’re here to ensure you feel at home from day one.

Development opportunities

Once you’re settled into your new role, there are lots of opportunities to progress with St John Ambulance, if that’s something that you’d like to do.

You might want to take on a new challenge by stepping up into a leadership role or maybe you just want to expand your skill set. We offer courses and learning opportunities for all our volunteers.

1. Application - Fill out an application form online to register your interest in a specific role.

2. Interview - We’ll invite you to a friendly interview or selection event to get to know you better and discuss how your skills and passion align with the role.

3. Recruitment checks - To keep everyone safe, we’ll run several checks. These will vary depending on the type of role you apply for.

4. Get started - Well done, you’re now an official St John Ambulance volunteer! You'll meet the team again and be given a full introduction to the organisation, so you can better understand who we are and what we stand for. We’ll also provide you with all the training and support you need to start making an impact in your new role.

How long until I start volunteering?

We try to ensure that the process is as smooth and quick as possible, as we appreciate everyone who takes the time to apply. From when you first submit your application to when training begins, it can take a few months to get you ready to start volunteering. This is so we can do all the necessary checks and make sure that you are the right fit for the role and St John Ambulance. We will keep in touch with you at each stage of the process.
