Volunteer as an Emergency Responder

Make a real difference in your community

Four Emergency Responder volunteers in high-vis jackets walking along a street.

Do you have passion for helping others?

Do you want to learn life-saving skills and meet new people?

Do you want to make a real difference in your community?

You don’t need to know first aid to become an Emergency Responder. We’ll provide all the first aid training you may need.

What do Emergency Responders do?

  • Assess and treat patients at community events.

  • Assist with moving and handling patients.

  • Work independently and within a team.

  • Lead first aid scenes and deliver patient care.

  • Provide clear handovers to colleagues and emergency services.

  • Represent St John Ambulance in your community.

The backs of three St John Ambulance volunteers stood at the side of a large sports stadium looking out to the pitch. In front of one of them is a wheelchair.

As an Emergency responder, you should:

  • Be able to recognise someone’s welfare needs and use your training to respond appropriately.

  • Be able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of people.

  • Be compassionate and empathetic.

  • Be able to perform CPR (kneeling by the patient and delivering chest compressions for at least two minutes without stopping), and assist with the moving & handling of patients.

  • Be able to motivate, inspire, and support others.

  • Show enthusiasm for the work of St John Ambulance and live our values.

  • Have good functional skills with Maths, English and IT (roughly the equivalent of passing GCSEs at grade C/4 or above).

When you join, we'll provide:

  • An induction programme introducing you to the charity.

  • Emergency Responder course.

  • Your out-of-pocket expenses.

  • The uniform for this role.

How long until I start volunteering?

We try to ensure that the process is as smooth and quick as possible, as we appreciate everyone who takes the time to apply. From when you first submit your application to when training begins, it can take a few months to get you ready to start volunteering. This is so we can do all the necessary checks and make sure that you are the right fit for the role and St John Ambulance. We will keep in touch with you at each stage of the process.
