What's involved

Hourly commitment: 1-2 days per month plus 1-2 days week week during school holidays

Family Learning Volunteer

Are you passionate about inspiring children and families through history, creativity, and storytelling? Would you like to support the Museum’s Learning and Engagement Team in delivering a welcoming and engaging programme of family activities? This is a hands-on volunteer role where you will help families explore the Museum together through crafts, trails, storytelling, and interactive learning experiences.

What will you be doing?

·      Supporting the development, delivery, and evaluation of the Museum’s programme of free family activities.

·      Helping to facilitate crafts, storytelling, trails, and interactive activities for children and their grown-ups.

·      Providing practical support to help families learn together in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

·      Assisting with activities including Under 5s workshops, school holiday sessions for children aged 3–10, and Seacole Sessions supporting Autistic and neuro-diverse families.

·      Welcoming families to the Museum and helping to ensure they have a positive and enjoyable experience.

·      Representing St John positively and in line with our HEART values.

Requirements for the role?

·      An interest in working with children and families in a heritage or learning environment.  

·      A friendly, approachable, and welcoming attitude.

·      Confidence in communicating with both adults and children.

·      Enthusiasm for creativity, storytelling, and hands-on learning activities.

·      Reliability and willingness to work as part of a team.

·      Volunteering will take place at the Museum of the Order of St John in London.

·      Full training will be provided and no previous museum or learning experience is required.

How often will you be volunteering?
Family activities take place throughout the year, including monthly Under 5’s workshops during term time, school holiday activities, and occasional special events. Volunteer opportunities are flexible and will be discussed with the Learning and Engagement Team.

What you’ll learn

·      Welcome and induction to the Museum team.

·      The history of St John, its people, and its lifesaving work in communities.

·      How to support family learning in a museum setting.

·      Experience delivering creative activities and engaging visitors of different ages.

·      Skills in communication, facilitation, and audience engagement.

Selection activities

An interview with our Learning & Engagement Manager and Learning & Engagement Officer.

An Enhanced DBS with check of Children’s Barred list will be required.

Getting started
Please be aware that before getting started there will be some online and in-person training to complete, including Level 1 Safeguarding.
