About the Role

St John Ambulance and the NHS are working in partnership to prepare young people to become health volunteers. 

As Regional Programme Lead, you will manage and support our Project Leads and their delivery teams within the wider St John Ambulance NHS Cadet programme across a broad geographical area. You will work with our partner NHS Trusts to explore new ways of working with young people in a volunteering setting and look to how local organisations can support this venture. You will be an essential part of our management structure, leading a cohort of NHS Cadet programmes and ensuring the health volunteering options for young people are consistently delivered. This role will be responsible for the recruitment of programme delivery teams in their region in what will be a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Additional Information

Ideally the post holder will be based in the North West of England. We can potentially consider other locations for the right candidate, but you may need to travel to this area to meet staff and Trusts.

The NHS Cadets programme was created by St John Ambulance in partnership with the National Health Service. The programmes primary aim is to encourage young people from communities that are currently underrepresented in the NHS and St John Ambulance to consider volunteering or potentially a career in healthcare. Our target groups include but are not limited to those young people who are involved in the care system, are young carers, are from ethnic minority communities, those who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) or at risk of becoming NEET and those who would not previously have considered volunteering or a career in health care. It includes opportunities to participate in either volunteering experiences, social action projects or to volunteer within their local NHS Trusts, depending on the programme.

The Regional Lead is approx.12-month fixed term contract. This is a management level role and there will be limited interaction with young people. The post can be based in any permanently staffed St John Ambulance premises in the North West. It may on occasions be possible to work from home. As an NHS Cadet Regional Lead, you will join an experienced and supportive team in the development and implementation of this exciting and ambitious new project. You will work closely with current partners and develop new partnerships including but not limited to NHS Trusts, youth organisations and schools to recruit young people and staff.

You will ideally have previous experience of managing work with young people, working in or with the NHS or other social care projects and of successful partnership work with a range of organisations and individuals. Your ability to use this previous experience will be key to your and our success.

You will also recruit and manage a team of project leads and youth support workers comprised of a mixture of paid and volunteer staff. Together, you will recruit and deliver the Foundation and Advanced Pathways. Targeting specific groups of young people enabling them to develop skills and knowledge related to volunteering and opportunities in the NHS. You will also secure volunteering experiences and opportunities for the cadets in the relevant NHS Trusts and other social care facilities. Please note the role has limited contact with young people.

Please note that currently some sessions for young people are face to face while others are virtual, using Microsoft teams. Most meetings with inhouse and external stakeholders remain virtual, as Covid restrictions continue to lift, the role may involve a significant travel between allocated locations and Trusts.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have experience of working in a similar line management position and a passion for working with young people. You will ideally have experience of bringing together partnerships across voluntary and statutory youth provision aimed at increasing opportunities for young people from marginalised communities. You will have experience in recruitment and retention of staff and volunteers. Regional travel will be essential.
