About us

What is NHS Cadets?

NHS Cadets is a programme for young people (14-18 year olds, or up to 25 for young people with a disability and/or special educational needs) from all backgrounds. During this programme, you will learn practical skills for a future in healthcare, and explore the different roles within the NHS.

The programme consists of two pathways: Foundation (for 14–16 year olds) and Advanced (for 16–18 year olds).

Find out more from our team below.

Whilst both pathways complement each other, you do not have to do both and can start on the Advanced course. If you complete the Foundation course under the age of 16, you can go straight onto the Advanced course if one is available, you do not have to wait until you are 16.

Key skills

The key skills module is one that’s covered on both the Foundation and Advanced Pathways. It’s an introduction to essential skills that you’ll use both as an NHS Cadet, and in future healthcare roles. You’ll be given an overview to the pathway and St John’s values, as well as take part in games for you to get to know the other Cadets in your group. There are also sessions to develop your awareness of practical skills like moving and handling, GDPR, safeguarding and first aid which will be useful in future healthcare roles.

This partnership with the NHS will create a new generation of young people motivated to learn more about health volunteering and social action. The unique hands-on experience that being a cadet provides will undoubtedly lead to many future healthcare professionals emerging.
