About the Role
The Museum of the Order of St John is looking for an experienced Archivist to appraise, sort, catalogue and make accessible the extensive 19th and 20th century organisational archive of the Order of St John and St John Ambulance. The archive consists of official and unofficial documents, diaries, ephemera, oral histories, photographs and audio-visual material. This is a new role for the organisation (historically the archive has fallen within the Museum curator’s remit). Significant progress has been made in recent years through discrete project-based cataloguing initiatives and through commissioning external specialist advice. Building on these foundations, the role will be responsible for developing and implementing new policies, procedures and creating a cataloguing hierarchy from scratch. Working closely with the Head of Collections and curatorial and learning colleagues, the successful candidate will transform the management of the archive, ensuring both its long-term preservation and realising its potential to inform and inspire audiences. Longer-term, the Archivist will be responsible for identifying gaps and developing the collection. Volunteers will play a vital part in delivering the strategy, working under the guidance and direction of the Archivist.
For an informal discussion about the role please contact Anna Mason, Head of Collections and Public Engagement, at anna.mason@sja.org.uk
