A chart comparing the mental health courses that St John Ambulance offers.

Designed to complement Mental Health First Aid provision in workplaces, this course qualifies learners as Mental Health Advocates, preparing them to role model healthy behaviours, start supportive conversations, and promote mental health and wellbeing across the organisation. By encouraging early intervention, this training is designed to help workplaces create a culture of peer support and reduced stigma. Delegates will leave equipped to lead wellbeing conversations, signpost support, and act as a positive influence within their team.

Ideal for anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of mental health and develop the skills to support their own and others' wellbeing in the workplace. Whether you're a manager, team leader, HR professional, or simply passionate about creating a supportive work environment, this training will equip you with the confidence to make a real difference.

Help build a workplace that proactively supports mental wellbeing. Take the one-day Mental Health Advocate course to empower individuals to become visible, confident, and proactive champions for mental health at work.

Unlike the Mental Health First Aiders who may focus on crisis response, with their full two-day training and optional certification, Advocates will support to help shape everyday culture, offering informal support, running wellbeing “toolbox talks”, and encouraging open dialogue.

By completing this course, delegates will:

  • Understand how to support colleagues and create a more mentally healthy work environment.
  • Learn how to spot signs of poor mental health and signpost to appropriate support.
  • Be able to initiate meaningful, empathetic conversations.
  • Build confidence to raise awareness and reduce stigma in the workplace.

The topics that will be covered include:

  • Introduction to Mental Health First Aid – Understanding the role and responsibilities of a Mental Health First Aider.
  • The Mental Health Ripple Effect – How mental health challenges affect individuals and teams in the workplace.
  • Recognising the Signs – Identifying symptoms of common mental health conditions.
  • Confidentiality and Safeguarding – When and how to share concerns responsibly.
  • Active Listening Skills – Techniques for supportive, non-judgmental conversations.
  • Empathic Conversations – Approaching sensitive topics with care and understanding.
  • Mental Health Action Plan – A structured approach to offering support.
  • Supporting in Crisis Situations – Suicide awareness, panic attacks, and crisis intervention.
  • Cultural Differences in Mental Health – Understanding how cultural backgrounds influence mental health perceptions.
  • Maintaining Your Own Wellbeing – Strategies for self-care and resilience.
  • Signposting to Professional Help – Directing people to appropriate mental health resources.
  • Scenario-Based Learning – Applying skills through real-world case studies.

Ensure that your leadership teams understand the stages of training in order to develop a combination that works best for your workplace environment. Safeguard those around you with fully trained and certified Mental Health First Aiders who are equipped with the skills to support in real world scenarios where comprehensive knowledge is required. Support your mental health first aiders with a team of educated advocates who can demonstrate confidence to effectively deliver empathetic communication. Lastly, encourage most of your team to undertake short E-learning courses that promote the awareness of mental ill-health in the workplace.
