Our Blended Online First Aid courses give you the best of both worlds: the convenience of online learning, and the confidence-building power of expert-led, practical training. This blended learning model allows you to complete the theory online at your own pace, then attend expert-led, in-person training to master the hands-on skills that save lives.

Whether your first aiders are training for the first time or renewing certificates, blended learning is a flexible, cost-effective way to meet your legal obligations – and make sure your team is ready to act in the moments that matter.

✅ Legal compliance, meeting HSE standards – fully compliant, trusted certification

✅ Less time in the classroom – reduce disruption and travel costs

✅ Value for money – fewer in-person training hours, same expert quality

✅ Hands-on, face-to-face learning – gain real practical confidence, not just theoretical knowledge

✅ Flexible theory modules – complete online, anywhere, anytime

✅ Led by specialists – learn from the UK’s leading first aid trainers

What is Blended Online First Aid Training?

Blended online training splits the course into two parts:

  1. Online theory: Interactive modules with videos, scenarios, quizzes, and full support

  2. In-person session: Join a practical session at a nearby St John Ambulance venue – or arrange group training at your workplace – led by expert trainers to build muscle memory, boost confidence, and put your online learning into action.

This approach offers flexibility and value without cutting corners. You can’t learn CPR just by watching a video; you need to practise it, feel it, and be guided by an expert. That’s what makes our blended model so effective – and fully compliant with legal workplace first aid requirements.

Who Is Blended Online First Aid training For?

Blended Online First Aid Training is ideal for:

  • Businesses who want legally compliant, high-quality training with less time in the classroom

  • Teams in low-risk or high-risk workplaces, across all industries and sectors

  • Staff members who need first aid qualifications that meet the right standards, but want the flexibility of less time in the classroom.

Nurseries, schools and early years professionals needing Ofsted-approved paediatric training.

Is Blended Learning Right for Your Team?

Our blended courses offer great flexibility – but the online learning must be completed independently before attending the face-to-face session.

To get the best from this format, those booked onto a Blended Online course should be confident in:

  • Reading and understanding written English

  • Completing online learning without additional support

  • Working independently through interactive videos, quizzes, and scenarios

If your delegate might struggle with written content, or speaks English as an additional language, they may still do well – but the fully face-to-face version may offer a better experience.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What workplace first aid training does my business legally need to provide?+

Under UK health and safety legislation, employers must ensure they have adequate first aid provision. The level of training required depends on your workplace risk assessment. HSE-compliant courses include Emergency First Aid at Work and First Aid at Work.

Are St John Ambulance courses HSE approved?+

Yes. All our workplace first aid courses – including our Blended Online options – meet the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) standards and give learners a recognised certificate valid for three years.

Who should take first aid training in the workplace?+

Anyone designated as a first aider should receive formal training. This could include team leaders, health & safety reps, or any staff in a role where they may need to respond to an incident.

How many first aiders does my business need?+

It depends on the size of your organisation, the level of risk, and working patterns. As a guide, low-risk workplaces may need one first aider per 50 employees, while higher-risk environments require more. Use our first aid calculator for guidance on your workplace.

What is a Blended Online First Aid course?+

A blended course combines online modules you complete at your own pace with an in-person practical session led by qualified trainers. This format offers flexibility, reduces classroom time, and ensures your training meets HSE requirements.

Is a blended course as valid as a fully in-person course?+

Yes. As long as the course is completed with a certified provider like St John Ambulance, and includes expert-led practical training, the qualification is exactly the same and fully compliant with legal HSE requirements.

What are the benefits of blending learning?+

Blended learning helps businesses train first aiders faster and smarter-cutting downtime, reducing costs, and building real-world skills through expert-led practice. It combines convenience with compliance, giving your team confidence and certification without disrupting your workflow.

Can I really learn first aid online?+

You can learn the theory online – such as the role of a first aider, recognising signs and symptoms, and treatment steps. But practical skills like CPR, using a defibrillator, and dealing with choking must be practised in person, which is why we include a hands-on session with every blended course.

How long does the online part take?+

The online modules are self-paced, but typically take 2–4 hours for Emergency First Aid at Work and 4–6 hours for First Aid at Work.

Do the online and in-person elements need to be booked separately?+

No, when you book a Blended Online First Aid course, you book it all in one. You select the date and venue that suits you for the in-person element of the course, and you will also be linked to the online learning.

Do I need to complete the online learning before the in-person training?+

Yes, the online learning must be completed before the practical in-person training takes place and you won’t be allowed to take part in the in-person training if the online learning isn’t completed. The two parts of the course must be done within 3 weeks of each other. This is important, so that the first aid theory is fresh in your mind when you attend the practical first aid training.

Where do the practical sessions take place?+

We have a regular schedule of face-to-face training at St John Ambulance first aid training venues across England, which are all easy to book online. For group bookings, we can also deliver the practical session at your workplace. To submit a request for group training at your premises, please click here.

What do I need to complete the online modules?+

All you need is a computer, tablet or smartphone with internet access. The modules include videos, scenarios, and quizzes to reinforce learning, plus support and how-to guides if needed.

How long is the qualification valid for?+

All our workplace first aid certificates are valid for three years.

What if I need to renew my certificate?+

For the First Aid at Work qualification, we offer a Blended First Aid at Work Requalification course. If your current certificate is still valid, you can renew it with a shorter 2-day course.

To renew an Emergency First Aid at Work certificate, or a Paediatric First Aid certificate, simply rebook onto the same course.

Can I book training for multiple team members at once?+

Yes – you can book group training at your site. Just tell us what you need and we’ll arrange the best option for your organisation.

Alternatively, you can easily block-book spaces on our scheduled courses on our website.

Will I receive proof of completion?+

Yes, successful learners will receive a St John Ambulance certificate, which is widely recognised and compliant with the required legal standards.
