Job Summary

The Philanthropy Manager role sits within the Philanthropy and Partnerships Team comprising Trusts and Statutory, Major Donors and Corporate Partnerships. This is a new and critical role for the organisation to realise it’s mission to put the power of first aid in everyone’s hands.  At the heart of St John is the work of thousands of dedicated volunteers saving lives each and every day in communities across England. Recently St John has undergone a significant change to how volunteers work and engage in their communities driven by our desire to give volunteers and those they serve, the best possible experience.

We are looking for a dynamic, experienced and passionate Philanthropy professional to cultivate major donor relationships in the heart of communities across England, to harness the opportunity and enthusiasm brought upon by this new approach to community engagement. The successful candidate will lead the cultivation and stewardship of relationships with high-net worth households in specific local areas, working collaboratively with senior volunteers, stakeholders, Board members and colleagues to raise funds and commitment for the work of St John and the impact it delivers in the heart of communities - building resilient communities and empowering the next generation of young people.

St John Ambulance works at the heart of communities, supporting and enabling them to access and receive physical and mental health first aid. We do this through developing and providing effective community response and outreach services (e.g. Ambulance response & Night-time Economy) and using our longstanding expertise to empower people with vital clinical skills and the confidence to use them (e.g. our Volunteers and Community Advocates, NHS Cadets and Young Responders programmes). There is also a buoyant social enterprise network which delivers first aid training and supplies medical consumables to businesses and consumers.

This is an exciting time of transformation with an opportunity to lead and mature the charity’s data maturity by leading a new data strategy. 


About You

  • Significant experience operating and driving philanthropic income growth at a senior level
  • Significant experience of identifying and cultivating cold prospects
  • Demonstrable evidence of successfully securing six or seven figure donations from individuals or funders
  • Significant experience and a proven track record of cultivating and stewarding six and seven figure relationships
  • Experience of working closely with senior individuals internally and externally such as Directors, CEO, Chair, senior volunteers, Patrons and Trustees 

About the Role

  • Accountable for cultivating and stewarding major donor relationships for those committed to delivering local impact
  • Work alongside the key senior stakeholders (staff and volunteers) to identify potential prospects and work collaboratively to cultivate the relationship for St John at large and, make the ask
  • Create and implement a strategy to build and maximise local philanthropy to ensure relationships, systems and processes are embedded for long term success
  • Lead and manage the development of relevant philanthropic proposals, working with staff across multiple departments
  • Grow the pipeline working closely with the Prospect Researcher to identify and research new prospective funders and planning advanced strategies to increase major gifts from prospects able to donate major gifts
  • Embed strong stewardship and prospecting approaches to maximise opportunities and support the team to develop their portfolios
  • Work alongside the Philanthropy Manager (Special Events) and Community Fundraising team to ensure a portfolio of bespoke events for prospects and major donors are delivered to meet the needs of our strategy
