On 24th June St John Ambulance celebrates St John’s Day. Traditionally we would celebrate the day together, but since 2020, as with most celebrations we have had to mark the occasion virtually.

2022 is a special year for St John Ambulance as we are celebrating 100 years of youth work, and the day is an opportunity to say thank you to our volunteers who continue to save lives.

One of the ways we do this is by asking building across England to Light up Green to show their support. In 2020 we had just over 40 buildings and in 2021 we had just under 150 take part and light up green! Type in #StJohnsDay2021 in to Twitter to see pictures from the day.

In 2022 we want to go even bigger. 2022 is a big year for St John Ambulance and we want to make sure we take every opportunity to show out volunteers how much we appreciate the work they do!

Ask me why we lit up Green

We asked some of our 2021 participants to tell us why they chose to Light up Green for us this year:

Thales Group | United Kingdom

Thales’s Green Park UK headquarters has joined some of the UK’s most famous landmarks, including Lincoln Cathedral, that were lit up in green in support of St John Ambulance volunteers.

June 24th was St John’s Day and the Reading-based global tech company showed its support for the organisation and for all of Thales members of staff who regularly give up their time to help save lives and support their communities across the country.

At sunset on Thursday, from 9.30 to 10pm, the Green Park building was illuminated in the distinctive green of St John Ambulance to say a thank you to all of the organisation’s volunteers who have been working throughout the pandemic and in support of the vaccination rollout across the country.

Thales has a policy of encouraging and supporting volunteer engagement in the community and gives members of staff two days off a year to get involved. Additionally, Thales has given an extra allowance for Covid-19 related volunteers to recognise the extra pressure they have been under due to the pandemic.

Company Secretary Mike Seabrook, who is based at Green Park and leads the company’s charitable trust efforts, said: We really value the commitment and positive attitude that our volunteers bring to our workforce and this seemed like a really important way to show our support for St John Ambulance.

We have volunteers giving up their time for all sorts of organisations, including St John Ambulance and other fantastic charities and groups.

It’s nice to think that our headquarters was illuminated green in support of a fantastic organisation and maybe added a little something to the Green Park skyline for one night to remind people of the great work that they do.

Ask me how to take part in Light up Green

It’s easy – light your building up green at sunset. It is that simple for you to help us say thank you to all the volunteers

Date: 24th June 2022
Time: Sunset in your area, which is between 9:30pm and 10:00pm
Colour: Ideally, we want everything lit up green, but we know everyone may not have green so just light up whatever colour you can.

If you can’t light up a building then take part in our summer of Go Green and find a different way to show your thanks and support to out volunteers.
