Because of my first aid training with St John Ambulance, I knew exactly what I needed to do when a medical emergency happened on a night out.

After realising a gentleman had collapsed, I rushed over to help. He was slumped in his chair, unconscious but breathing.

With the help from hotel staff, we lowered him onto the floor. At this point he had stopped breathing. I told staff to call for an ambulance and I immediately started cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Fortunately, after one round of CPR, he started breathing again.

By the time the ambulance crew arrived, the situation was under control, and the gentleman was now breathing on his own. He was taken to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery to have a pacemaker fitted and was discharged a short time later.

It was an incredible feeling to know I was responsible for saving somebody’s life.
