You must have a sufficient number of the right type(s) of fire extinguisher, as well as other appropriate equipment as identified in your fire safety risk assessment, for the prevention and combat of fire.

Fires are classed according to the material that is burning. The extinguisher used must be appropriate for the class of fire.

Class A: Fires involving freely burning materials

For example, wood, paper, textiles and other carbon-based materials.

Appropriate fire extinguishers:

  • Water
  • Foam
  • Dry powder
  • Wet chemical

Class B: Fires involving flammable liquids

For example, petrol and spirits. This class does not include alcohol or cooking oil.

Appropriate fire extinguishers:

  • Foam
  • Dry powder
  • CO2 gas
  • Wet chemical

Class C: Fires involving flammable gases

For example, butane and propane.

Appropriate fire extinguishers:

  • Dry powder

Class D: Fires involving flammable metals

For example, magnesium and lithium.

Appropriate fire extinguishers:

  • Specialist powder

Class E: Fires involving electrical equipment

For example, photocopiers, televisions and computers.

Appropriate fire extinguishers:

  • Dry powder
  • CO2 gas

Class F: Fires involving cooking oil and fat

For example, sunflower oil, olive oil, lard and butter.

Appropriate fire extinguishers:

  • Wet chemical
